Angel

Biography/Society, France 2011

Angel, a 36-year-old Ecuadorian transvestite who works as a prostitute in Paris, obtains a residence permit. For Christmas, he can finally return to his country, Ecuador, and reunite with his family, whom he left five years ago. The film follows Angel on his two-month journey, offering an in-depth immersion into a complex and difficult-to-access world. Illustrating the dynamics of remittances sent by immigrants to their families, Angel is a film about the weight of homophobia in Latin American societies. Set mainly in a poor neighborhood of Guayaquil, this documentary tells the epic story of a character who is as confusing as he is endearing.
