Surrounded by people and yet alone. Isabelle (Juliette Binoche) lives the life of a single woman in the big city of Paris. She is a woman with a past - strong and independent, recognized as an artist, but not very successful when it comes to love. Her search for true love fails again and again because of the discrepancy between her aspirations and the compromises she would have to make. The gap between what women want and what men are willing to give seems too great. In her perplexity, Isabelle hopes that a fortune teller (Gérard Depardieu), of all people, will answer the question that concerns her more than anything else - does love for life exist or is it just a utopia?
